'Cause I'm Lazy, That's Why

Yeah yeah, been a while. Nothing really that new to report... been working and going to shows and listening to records and watching a lot of Babylon 5 (err forget I said that last one). A quick June recap:

  • jacko walked (obviously this is the most important item)
  • our team won our foosball league
  • i went to vegas for a weekend (happy birthday giz)
  • i went to sacramento for a weekend (and raided the outlet stores on the way back, those things are awesome)
  • the republicans did a bunch of dumb crap
  • the democrats did a bunch of dumb crap
  • the supreme court did a bunch of really dumb crap
  • the religious right got mad because I said "crap"
  • the falcon rode again
  • i founded the flickr doodle group
  • we launched MyWeb 2.0
  • i saw a lot of bands play good
  • jon stewart made fun of everyone

Maybe if I feel less lazy I'll write something interesting. I've been really missing being in a band lately... maybe I'll start one. Cheers.

Questionable?

Today a friend turned me on to a web comic called Questionable Content. It's great. Read it from the beginning to really appreciate it. Personal favorites include:

  • This diatribe on the Fiery Furnaces. Notice the description of the band, which bears a striking similarity to my own description two months earlier (in my Top 30 of 2004), when I said they sounded like "The Who, Gilbert & Sullivan, and P.J. Harvey had sex on a piano and gave birth to ADHD boy/girl twins" (ok, so maybe I'm just pretty proud of that line and was looking for an excuse to bring it up, so what).
  • This one featuring a guest artist who tries (sucessfully) to piss off the indie kids.
  • And this one about record reviews which details a thought process I have at least ten times each day.

Anyways, I'm off to go see Of Montreal. The supporting band, Tilly and the Wall, has a tap dancer as their rythm section. Seriously, that is ridiculous.

Show List

In honor of the large amount of summer shows coming up, I thought I'd add the list of shows I'm planning to attend to the site. And since I'm a lazy bastard who has no desire to maintain a show list in more that one place, I hatched a devious scheme. Don't let the simplicity of show list you see at the left decieve you... that thing has a dynamic lifecycle all it's own. Here's how it gets generated:

  • I maintain a separate calendar in my email/calendar program, Bloomba. This calendar contains only shows, with the performer name and venue in the title and description of the event.
  • Using Bloomba's calendar publishing feature, I set it to autogmagically publish my calendar hourly to iCal Exchange, which is a free site that hosts iCal calendar files. The HTML version of the published calendar can be viewed here.
  • Using PHP on the blog, I download the ICS version of the calendar hosted at iCal Exchange and parse it using a code chunk I found here, then I do some venue information lookup in local table and display the results.

What does this mean for you? Absolutely nuthin' ™. But I can add a show to my Treo or to my calendar in Bloomba and minutes later it will automatically appear on the blog. Hooray for me!
